We are just under a month away from the 2022 $70,000 Broadbeach 5-a-Side beginning here at 'The Home of Bowls' and what better way to preview the tournament than naming the competing sides and players.

First off the rank we're pleased to introduce the home side...

Broadbeach Bulls (QLD)
Broadbeach Bulls.jpeg

The Bulls will be eager to play in front of their home crowd and will want to engrave their names on the trophy with the 2019 Champions, Adelaide.

The Bulls will be managed by two of the best players in the World - Australian Open Champion Aron Sherriff and Canadian World Champion Ryan Bester. Australian Pairs Champion Sean Ingham, Australian Triples Champion Nick Cahill & former Australian Open Fours Champion Bradley Lawson will all look to continue runs of great form and lift the trophy for the home club.

A strong Sydney crew who will have their eyes on the prize...

Engadine Cougars (NSW)
Broadbeach Bulls.jpeg

Well known around the state of NSW, the Cougars were the Grade 1 State Pennant Runners Up earlier this year. They have class and talent, but can they mix well enough for a finals berth?

NSW Representatives, Mason Lewis (Open) & Callum Murray (Under 25) are some of the finest young talent in the State and will be hard to beat on the Broadbeach greens, as will rising talent Jordan Thompson appearing in his first 5-a-Side event. Jack Lewis is no stranger to big occasions, having also represented NSW on numerous occasions in Under 25's. Rounding out the five stars is Chris Roberts who will be vying with the Cougars for the $24,000 Winner's cheque.

One of Sydney's most competitive clubs who've been on the scene decades. It's the...

Merrylands Magic (NSW)
Broadbeach Bulls.jpeg

It's been a couple of years since a 5-a-Side event has been played, but the Magic aren't new to this big occasion. With plenty of NSW Pennant Flags to their name, Merrylands will certainly want to add a 5-a-Side trophy to the cabinet. With a team full of champions, they will certainly compete with the best.

The Magic will include the likes of current NSW Champions, Shawn Thompson, Michael Clarke and Peter Harry. Well-renowned bowler in NSW, Darren Morrison will also be in action for his club, as well as the Tiger himself, Tony Wood.

Arguably one of the strongest clubs in the Newcastle/Hunter region, the...

Raymond Terrace Jets (NSW)
Broadbeach Bulls.jpeg

No strangers to the 5-a-Side format the Raymond Terrace Jets will certainly be a hot team at this years competition. Former Champions, they are looking for another title and with a lineup of players like this, they can certainly score the chocolates in this year's tough field.

2019 Australian Singles Champion, Matt Baus will want to get his team off to a solid start and back-up with the likes of World Champion of Champions Winner, Lee Schraner and NSW State Singles Winner, Lennon Scott this might be the year for Raymond Terrace. Shannon Gittoes and Jason Stokes, two of the best players out of the Newcastle area, will play a pivotal role in creating a successful campaign for the club.

They've won 5-a-Side events before, can they do it again?

Warilla Gorillas (NSW)
Broadbeach Bulls.jpeg

One of the hottest sides, the Warilla Gorillas, have a total combined weight of just over a ton (of bowls talent that is), you won't have time enough to count all the State, National and International titles amongst these players.

Australian Jackaroo's Aaron Teys & Corey Wedlock will headline the Gorillas for their campaign, as will Northern Ireland's Gary Kelly who will be ready to pulverize some of his opposition. World Cup Champion, Jeremy Henry will watch over the youthful Gorilla's, whilst Lee Stinson will be sure to pack all of his good bowls for the Gold Coast trip.

Another awesome alliance to add to the list, we present...

Bundoora RSL Hornets (VIC)
Broadbeach Bulls.jpeg

This is a side mixed with youth and experience, as well as plenty of energy and competitive nature. The Hornets will be keen to taste success in their first 5-A-Side at Broadbeach.

Australian Open Fours Runner Up's, Dave Donaldson and Mick West will add plenty of experience and strength to this side. Former Australian Rep, Terry Antram will lead the side with the NSW Zone 2 Veteran, Warren Shipley. 2021 Australian Open Men’s Pairs Champion, Matt Johnstone will feature as a powerhouse player for the side, whilst Daniel Clarke & Bill Ahoy will be hard to beat up front.

Whittlesea Eagles (VIC)
Broadbeach Bulls.jpeg

Whittlesea are a former Premier Division club in Melbourne, having tasted plenty of success around the grounds. They are looking to climb back up the rungs into Premier Division, and we're certain they wouldn't mind a 5-a-Side title either.

The side will feature a strong outfit including Australian Open Runner-Ups, Ben Winther (Pairs) and Thor Shannon (Fours). Locals Paul Williamson, Robbie Millar & Kyle Williams will also join the Eagles. They are ready to soar into the Gold Coast and take on the field.

Time to introduce a local crew, from just a short hop down the Coast...

2022 PLQ Champions, this side isn’t short of experience on the big stage, nor with one another.

One of Australia’s best, Barrie Lester will look to guide the side to a pre-eminent event. Qld State Singles Winner, Dean McWhinney and the Runner-Up, Gary Pearson will join forces and create a solid ground for this team. Qld U25 Rep, Dale McWhinney-Shillington will be fired up and ready to do battle. Rounding out the side is Qld Legend, Scott De Jongh who will be keen as ‘mustard’ for the 5-A-Side.

From the vineyards and wineries of South Australia we welcome another mighty side, the

Grange Dolphins (SA)
Broadbeach Bulls.jpeg

The Grange Dolphins will be keen for the 5-a-Side title with this strong crew. Metropolitan Premier League Champions is not all they will want on the history boards this year.

Australian Representative Wayne Ruediger will lead the Dolphin's charge, along with one of SA's most lucrative skip's, Craig Mills. Young stars Tyson Wilson and Nathan Black will be highly valuable assets for Grange, along with the current SA State Pairs Champion, Marc Evans.
